Red White and Blue Family Outfits

We all want our family portraits to look amazing. And it is no small secret that your outfit selections can be the difference between a nice picture and one that wows. If you need summer family photo outfit ideas, and you love bold colors, this one is for you! I love this red, white and blue family outfit!

Don’t get me wrong.  I often steer my families away from using bold colors like red. But, if you are like me and loooove bold colors, there are a few tricks to wearing them in a family picture.

      PAIR BOLD COLORS WITH NEUTRALS

If you decide to wear a bold color like red, yellow or coral, pairing it with neutrals helps to anchor and tone it down. In the outfit above, red is paired with blue, white and light gray. All neutrals. Imagine for a moment that we swapped some of those colors out for other bright and vibrant colors. Like yellow. It would be overpowering. And too much.

      USE BOLD COLORS AS ACCENTS

We didn’t use this trick when planning the outfit above. But if you don’t love the idea of wearing a red dress, try wearing it for accents instead. Shoes, a wide belt, statement necklace or scarf are all places you can add a bold pop of color.

      TRY A MUTED VERSION

Do you love red, but just don’t feel you can pull it off? Try a muted version. Wine, berry or burnt red are all in the same family. But not as bold and vibrant.

      CHOOSE YOUR LOCATION WISELY

If your family plans to wear a lot of red in their family photos, be sure to consider the location of your pictures. If you are taking pictures at a park in Northeast Ohio, especially in the summer, you may find that you have a lot of greenery in the background. Paired with red, it can accidentally leave your pictures looking a little Christmassy. I love red, white and blue family outfits for 4th of July themed sessions, beach photos or in an urban setting.

      Fashion tip:

If you love bold colors go for it! To keep them from looking overwhelming in a photo, pair bold colors with neutrals. In the wardrobe above, the bold and bright red is tempered when paired with navy.
